Systemic Literature Reviews

using NVivo

Course Information
NVivo is a computer software package produced by QSR International that supports qualitative and mixed methods research. It has been designed for researchers working with very rich text-based and/or multimedia information (including interviews, open-ended survey responses, pictures, audios, videos, articles, social media and web content), where deep levels of analysis on small or large volumes of data are required. A completion certificate will be issued to each participant.

The course is designed

  • to engage participants with NVivo
  • to guide how to search, code, classify and query literature
  • to guide how to import Endnote/Mendeley/Zotero libraries into NVivo to aid in meta-analysis
  • to familiarise with tools for documenting decisions
  • to practice building a body of work that is useful in systematically establishing arguments for the use of theoretical frameworks, research designs, methods and techniques

The literature review is not just about analysing the current state of research and identifying the research 'gap'. Rather, it should also assist in identifying appropriate theoretical frameworks, research designs, methods and techniques. Issues of depth vs breadth are considered, as are strategies for writing. This workshop discusses literature reviews for the above purposes and a practical way to deal with the volume of literature that needs to be reviewed. The workshop is relevant to all researchers, particularly to early stage researchers with little experience of conducting systematic literature reviews.

Course Format

  • This training will be conducted using the Microsoft Windows platform only.
  • NVivo for Mac are welcome, but must be aware that all demonstrations will be provided in Windows.
  • Participants will be expected to have the latest version of the software installed on their own devices.
  • A 14 day free trial is available through QSR International.
  • Please do not open the trial version until just before the start of the course.
  • Once (or if) you have NVivo installed, please check the latest updates are installed within the program.
  • If you are using a laptop from your workplace, it will be essential that you install all your updates before attending the course. You may not have the authorisation to install software outside of your work environment.
  • Please have EndNote installed on your PC. The use of NVivo and EndNote will be demonstrated.
  • You will also need a copy of Micosoft Office on your PC.
